Finally got the chance to shoot at a location I've been driving by for months.. well years to be exact. I randomly dropped by last week to ask permission to shoot at this worn down greenhouse that is in the process of being renewed near my work. The owner gladly granted me permission and not only that but he went above and beyond to open up shop just for the shoot on a Sunday morning. Gracias Chapo!!!

Thanks Bianca for enduring the heat and humidity in the greenhouse! And to her mom for being such a great assistant!

Earlier in the year Carla Morrison was in town (from Mexico) so we took the opportunity to take some portraits during her short stay in Phoenix. She's currently getting ready to release an album later this summer. If you haven't already check her music out. Some years ago the Children of Light mentioned that some young man had visited them and was writing a book in which they would be mentioned in. I never thought much of it until recently and out of curiosity began doing a little research, came across it then bought it on amazon! The book is called Fruit Hunters by author Adam Leith Gollner.

Without any expectations I contacted the author and shared my photos with him and explained how I've been documenting the Children of Light for years now. He was kind enough to reply and share some of his own personal research he did about them while writing his book. He also wrote a little note about my photos on his website! Blog Challenge – Last Post

Well it's officially the last day of our blog challenge. I have to admit that I haven't been the best blogger but this challenge has definitely motivated me to post more regularly.

So for my last post I would like to leave you with one of my favorite shoots. Over the years I've enjoyed attending and photographing many local bands here in the valley but I've realized that I really enjoy taking portraits of musicians away from the stage. A friend of mine formally known as Spyder Johnson was the 1st musician I got to photograph. Here's some of my favorite shots from that shoot.

My friend Sara has these manniquinns that she replastered and made into art work for her home. Before she got started on her project I asked her to let me photograph the manniquinns. We set up in the garage and the sun was pretty much gone so I had her grab some house lamps and used that for lighting. Like usual there's never a plan and I tend to improvise alot w/stuff thats just laying around. Her name is Sylvia and her portraits were taken early 2007.

World Wide Photo Walk

Last year the art director from my work and I participated in Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photo Walk and we'll be attending again this year! We've signed up for the walk in Prescott.. it's a good excuse to be in somewhat cooler temperatures for the day. Unfortunately, it's at full capacity (sorry Garza) but they have 22 spots open in the Phoenix one just click on the link above if you're interested in being part of it. To make a long story short the event is open to anyone as long as you register and secure a spot in time and you meet w/the group that day and walk around and take photographs. Then everyone posts their pictures on flickr and winner are chosen. This event takes place ALL over the world its really neat and interesting to see all the amazing results from the walk. I'm taking part of a blog challenge and today is the official start date! If anyone is interested in participating please email me the link to your blog and it will be added to Awesome Blogs. There's no prizes but I've nomitated Jess & Jeremy to host a "blogparty" at the end of the challenge lol!

So here's my first official post for the challenge. These photographs were taken about a year ago at Boo's Warehouse in downtown Phoenix. A huge group of photographers (AZ Strobists) got together that day and we all shot at the same location.

"Mr. Pants" - A gentlemen who happened to be on location when we were shooting. I don't know his real name but he introduced himself as Mr. Pants.

"Pregnant Jeza" - My cousin Jezabel was my model for the shoot that day.

I've joined a blog challenge w/some friends so in the spirit of posting something every day you will be seeing alot of old photos. With that said here's some old darkroom prints from a photo class I took at MCC years ago.

"Sere Mi Madre" - Portrait of my aunt Tere (left) & cousin Jezabel (right). Look closely at the hands and you'll notice its not a mirror she's looking into. We shot this in my garage in the middle of the summer and used a glass to give the mirror effect.

"Violeta" - Portrait of my sister. This was shot in Puerto Peñasco.

"Untitled" - Photograph taken in Jerome, AZ.

"Mi Sombrita" - I was trying to take Ari's picture but she was too distracted by her shadow.

I'm finally getting around to editing Sara's portraits. I'll keep adding to this post as I go. We had been talking about taking some shots of her in a bridesmaid dress that she's about to get rid of. She had a location picked out near her house that I didn't get to see until we showed up for the shoot. The lighting was perfect that day.. nicely difussed by clouds. I styled her hair and between the both of us did her makeup. For not knowing what the hell we were doing I think we did ok. There was a moment of panic where we had to rush the makeup and hair to get to the location on time before the sun was too low. Overall, I think we pulled it off. Thanks for letting me torture you Sara and that goes for any of my friends that let me photograph them!

"Children of Light"

I first photographed the "Children of Light" in 2006 and recently went back home to take some portraits of them again. I intend to photograph them once or twice a year from now on. Throughout my teenage years, I lived only a couple miles from this group of people who call themselves "Children of Light." They believe to have been supernaturally chosen and called by God in 1949. The group originated in Canada and thru visions of God ended up in a secluded area of the southwestern part of Arizona in 1963. They acquired 80 acres of land and built their own homes, planted gardens, fruit trees and live a vegetarian lifestyle. They are also "Eunuchs and virgins for the kingdom of heaven's sake." Although they are a religious group they don't claim to be a certain religion instead they say this is a way of life that they've chosen to live. Elect Star, Elect Philip & Elect David are 3 of the original 18 members who remain there. DATELAND (this post JUST for you Chad!)

This weekend I went back home to Dateland to take some portraits of the "Children of Light" (which I will be posting in the next coming days). My friend Sara and I left Phoenix at 4:15am to catch the sunrise there and stayed till the sun went down. It was a long, cold & very windy day but the sunlight was perfect and made for a lot of photo opportunities. On our way to see the "Children of light" we were distracted by this abandoned marine bus and took a few shots. The 1st photograph of me was taken by Sara Placey and the rest by me.

Deerhunter / Times New Viking

A couple weekends ago I went to Modified to see Deerhunter, which was a very interesting show. After Deerhunter's set the lead singer decided to use the audience as guinea pigs for his new project which now I can't remember the name of it .. maybe it was called Slow Riding or something like that. After that very short set the band decided to all play musical chairs and switch their roles around for yet another set that they made up and got one of the girls from the crowd to sing while they played. Arianna's Yearly Portrait

I have a beautiful daughter that I don't photograph enough. She was a really good sport this past weekend when I took her out to my new favorite spot and photographed her for about an hour w/out a sweater on a really cold evening, she even had goosebumps .. poor thing. She needed very little direction and mostly just did her own thing, she even suggested most of the poses herself.
